As for the hotel guests the best way to stay secure is to make sure you dont have double foot steps walking to your room. Also confirm nobody suspicious is around as you are leaving. When you get into your room a good technique to ensure nobody is invading your room is to stack glassware in front of the door. This will create an alarm in the event the lock is being picked. most hotel rooms have an electronic deadbolt that is unlocked via keycard . Their are devices that are shaped like a thin wire with a bend and hook that is used to slide under the door, then turned upwards to loop the door handle to open it and make entry. Most modern hotel doors unlock from the inside just by turning the door knob to open since it has electric cutouts for the deadbolt. Another practice is to use hotel wifi on your cell phone, and not the data as it can be traced if someone knows you are in town and has you on a shit list. If you are extra paranoid, take a belt and tie it to the door compression swivel.
